In his long involvement in the arts, Robert Jackson has been active in music, visual arts, theatre, film and TV. He is a composer, performer, improviser, painter, producer, saxophonist and guitarist. He lives in Albion and is an active member of his community.

A multi-skilled musician, Robert studied Linguistics at Latrobe University and Composition at the VCA. He has developed distinctive guitar and saxophone styles and has been a featured soloist at Melbourne International Arts Festival and many contemporary music events. He has an abiding interest in the art of Improvisation, which he has studied extensively. He has played in a multitude of Rock and Jazz bands and been MD/Composer for Circus, Film & Theatre. He also held the part of Weasel in the Australian Shakespeare Company’s production of “Wind in the Willows” for 10 seasons.

His main musical focus is with The Legless Lizards

In 2006 he was an Artist-in-Residence at The Hunt Club Community Arts Centre for Brimbank City Council. During his tenure he made visual art and music inspired by the landscape of the Western Plains. In 2013 he was Artist-in-Residence at the Keilor Art Shed.

As a visual artist his main interest is in Landscapes, especially places (real or imagined) where the natural and the man-made collide. The Western landscape is a main inspiration for his work: with its sense of space, forgotten and remnant areas, encroaching suburbs and industry. He has several solo exhibitions and has produced several murals.

He has many other interests and is an active member of the Brimbank Community. He is President of the Albion Ardeer Community Club, a committee member of Friends of Iramoo, and has sat on several advisory boards and steering committees. Including The Eco-living Centre steering committee, the Albion Neighbourhood Plan Community Reference group, and the South Sunshine Arts Precinct Advisory Group.

He is also responsible for archaeological surveys being conducted along Kororoit Creek in Albion following his discovery of several Aboriginal artefact sites in the area.

In the 1980s he was a founding member/co-ordinator of The Melbourne Improvisers Association Inc., which promoted original music and was a committee member of the similar Make-it-up Club.

Robert has held several teaching positions including at Collingwood Tafe, Prahran Tafe, John Bolton Theatre School. YMCA Avondale Heights, Yarraville Special School and has taught music privately for many years. He is currently teaching instrumental music at Lynall Hall Community School.
